Konstantin Korovin was primarily a theater artist. To this day, in our country, performances in Korovin's design are going on and renewed. Initially, Konstantin studied at the art school in the architectural department - which, apparently, helped him a lot later in creating the scenery, in seeing the perspectives of the theater scene.
In his works, Korovin relied on the principles of impressionism; however, he rarely repeated the techniques characteristic of this direction of painting. Korovin’s works are more material and concrete, we can say that he created his own concept of impressionism. In his canvases, the artist was often inspired by Spain, typical at that time images of this vibrant southern country; many sketches of scenery created by him with their fractional solar contrast resemble a Moorish mosaic.
While working in a private theater of Mamontov, Korovin most often had to draw up fairy tales; it was a fairy tale that most clearly showed his talent as an artist. Fantasy, illusory sketches of the artist are often more like dreams than reality; for the theater scene, his unusual work was a great find.
Korovin’s painting The Theater is the complete embodiment of the stage sets for the performance of The Little Humpbacked Horse based on Yershov’s tale. The square with bright tents placed on it forms the perspective of the composition. The central acting figures are dressed in colorful costumes, creating the illusion of an oriental tale. The towers seen in the background are the quintessence of the feast; ethnically they combine the picturesque structures of Russian buildings with elements of oriental decor.
