This picture is the most famous work of the popular Soviet artist Yuri Raksha. The triptych consists of three separate paintings, united by one theme. The first is the Blessing of the battle, the second is the Anticipation, and the third is the wires of the militia.
Instead of depicting scenes on the battlefield, the artist decided to convey no less dramatic moments concerning not only the soldiers who defended the family and the homeland, but also ordinary people who would have to say goodbye to loved ones. Many of the warriors will not return home, and the realization of this is reflected in the grieving, worried eyes of a little girl on the first canvas of the triptych.
The soldiers, on the contrary, do not seem worried at all, they exude valor, courage and confidence. Warriors are aware that they will have to go through a difficult battle, from which they may not return alive, but they put the defense of the Motherland above the desire to live. Some warriors are depicted with a smile on their faces, which indicates that even in such situations, Russian men are ready to maintain optimism and faith in a brighter future.
The right wing of the triptych is called Militia Leads.
Finally, the troops went to battle, while only women, old people and children remained in the city. The faces of women are distorted by such inextricable feelings as longing, anxiety, and at the same time, the hope of men returning home. The woman on the right side of the picture, dressed in rich clothes, stands out especially strongly. With one hand she consoles a child who is about to burst into tears, and with the other she holds on to her stomach, in which the heart of an unborn child beats.
This work was the last in the life of the artist. Later he said that the triptych is an appeal to the dead ancestors who courageously went to death in the name of protecting their native land. The memory of the courage of the ancestors should prompt contemporaries to the idea that the Russian people should stick together.
